Our third and last child graduated from college yesterday. She was the last of my three kids to challenge the halls of academia. In fact, all three kids put on the cap and gown consecutively in 2010, 2011, and now 2012.
I knew that I would get very emotional at the first strains of Pomp and Circumstances. What I didn’t expect was how emotional I got at the complimentary breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express that Saturday morning.
You see, for years I’ve been traveling whether it was college campus visits, college acceptance days, college move ins, parent’s weekends, homecoming games and move outs. I’ve racked up countless hotel points, and always at hotels that serve these complimentary breakfasts.
And throughout, I’ve always chatted and befriended other parents who were there at that some location for the same reason. We’d chit chat about the kids, the college, the campus and almost get to know each other’s life stories over machine made pancakes or waffles, cinnamon cakes, and fake scrambled eggs and biscuits with that weird white gravy people pour over them.
I’m going to miss these breakfasts. I’m going to miss all those anonymous people I’ve broken bread with. But most of all, I am going to miss those special occasions with my kids. I am going to miss watching them deal with their apprehension, fears, ambitions, desires, challenges and conquests.
I thank God everyday for giving me those three special people, my three kids.
From all those SAT prep classes, the college applications, proofreading the college essays, waiting for the mailman to bring either the dreaded little envelope or the desired BIG brown one, through the countless FAFSA forms and beyond, I’m going to miss it all.
I am proud of them as they venture into the world. As a person who had no guidance from her own parents nor high school guidance counselors, I am very happy to have helped guide my own children through a very slippery slope and watch them walk into the path of adulthood with confidence. I pray that the wind is always at their back, and the sun always shines in their face.
Farewell my lovelies!
